The Strawberry Creek fens are nutrient-rich peatlands with high levels
of groundwater inflow, resulting in a less acidic environment than
the more common bog-type peatlands. The consistent flow and water
temperature creates ideal rearing and overwinter habitat for sockeye,
coho, pink and chum salmon and Dolly Varden trout.
The low acidity and a stable yet varied hydrologic regime produce
a highly diverse plant community, along with important nesting and
feeding habitat for migrant songbirds, waterfowl and raptors. This
area also provides habitat for brown/black bear, Sitka black-tailed
deer, wolf, ermine, beaver, flying squirrel, western toads, rough-skinned
newt and dragonfly.
Additional functions of Strawberry Creek include flood control,
water purification and nutrient flow to the Herbert/Eagle Rivers.
Strawberry Creek represents one of the largest, low-elevation fens
in Juneau and this is an opportunity to conserve a unique habitat
type.
