In support of our conservation approach, the Southeast Alaska Area Council, Boy Scouts of America submitted a letter of intent to enter into a conservation easement with the Land Trust. The Boy Scouts own title to one of the most scenic, recreational, and environmentally sensitive areas in the northern Southeast Alaska region. Located twenty five miles north of Juneau, the property consists of approximately 264 acres of important waterfowl habitat and recreational land adjacent to Eagle River and Lynn Canal.
One of the earliest steps in developing a conservation easement, a letter of intent from the landowner is non-legally binding document that adequately details a landowner’s vision for the future of the property with a conservation easement in place. Earlier this month the Boy Scouts documented their wish to secure their uses of the property in perpetuity, while assuring that it is never developed in a manner inconsistent with those purposes, or the interest of the public in general. Aside from reserving part of the property as a camp facility, they intend to restrict overall uses inconsistent with the preservation of natural values. By the execution of this letter of intent the Boy Scouts express their desire to facilitate maintaining it in that state. Next steps include an appraisal, baseline documentation preparation, and negotiations of easement provisions.
