Park and Recreation Endorse Plan Thursday March 25, 2004
The vision of establishing an overland trail link traversing
the southern end of Petersburg advanced in December with the local
Park and Recreation Advisory Board approving the concept of the
trail project. John Murgas, a land owner in Scow Bay, has developed
a proposal providing for a trail intersection with the future DOT
coastal path paralleling Mitkof Highway that would lead back to
Petersburg’s Sandy Beach recreation facility. The trail would
cover ground on the east side of the airport and provide alternative
access to the popular Forest Service “Raven’s Roost”
trail and cabin. At the meeting local resident Brain Paust said
he has observed indications of deer, moose, wolves, black bear,
and a variety of birds including owls while walking his dog in the
area. Under John’s proposal a conservation easement to be
held by the land trust, would cover a portion of his property and
encapsulate a nature trail connected to the major trail. With the
unanimous advisory board approval, we are looking for a volunteer
willing to work the trail project, developing partnerships and easements
on adjacent public land.
